Kampelman is a highly regarded former U.S diplomat who served as head of a number of delegations to Europe and the United Nations. Running parallel to his diplomatic career has been Kampelman's involvement in a passel of hardline advocacy campaigns that date back to the 1970s, when he served as vice chairman for the neoconservative-led Coalition for a Democratic Majority and as a high-ranking member of the Committee on the Present Danger. More recently, Kampelman has supported the activities of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, the Project for the New American Century, and the National Institute for Public Policy.
According to the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, which Kampelman has been associated with for decades, "On August 11, 1999, President Bill Clinton awarded Mr. Kampelman the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the nation. On January 18, 1989, President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Citizens Medal, which recognizes 'citizens of the United States who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.' Mr. Kampelman has also been the recipient of the Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In April 2000, he was among those receiving the first Library of Congress 'Living Legend' award." (1)
